The story: "‘Samantha Who?’ is an unlikely sitcom queen"
The analysis:
- Of the many new television shows this season is “Samantha Who?” starring Christina Applegate, and unlike many of the other shows that debuted this season this one is actually having some success. I found this article on MSNBC, which starts by explaining how rare it is to have a successful comical television show with a female role. The last comedy television shows with female roles include “Bewitched,” “I Love Lucy,” and most recently “Rosanne.” The story behind “Samantha Who?” is she was a serious business woman whose morals are questionable. After being hit by a car, and suffering a serious head injury she wakes up not remember anything from her past has to put together the pieces of her life and all the details that go along with it. The article continues to describe the plot and quips of the show but begins to question if it will remain successful on its own. “Samantha Who?” is currently being aired in the time slot after “Dancing with the Stars,” one of the currently most watched shows. The writer is skeptical if viewers will make the decision to watch Samantha on their own when it is not following their other favorite shows since Christina Applegate has had a few television flops since being the cute blonde on “Married with Children.”
I chose this article because I found it very interesting that it was a featured article on MSNBC, and also I am a watcher of “Samantha Who?” Christina Applegate is a familiar face to most and like many others I was anxious to see what the show would be like. After watching, I found the show witty and funny but never thought twice about the fact that it was a female lead role.
The purpose of this article is almost congratulating a female leading role for being successful. The author appears more surprised that the show is being received well despite the fact that the rest of the cast consists of C list actors at best. It is also discussed whether this show will be able to stand on its own against “Two and a Half Men,” a male dominated comedy. I find it amazing that a female leading role in a comedy is something rare and it is still necessary to acknowledge that a female can be successful on her own, or as a lead. Though the author leaves it on a positive note mentioning that it is a show with potential to be long running, he is still skeptical that Samantha will be able to stand on her own once “Dancing with the Stars” is no longer helping her out.
